Gone till November

It’s that time of year again.

 

Every year, without fail, business owners and employers get to November and think:

“What are we doing next year?”

The time is now

 

This is the time of year where you start thinking about your budget for next year.

 

You start looking at your projects, incoming work, projected income, and staffing costs.

 

The last one always makes people think harder.

“Have we got enough staff?” or “do we need the ones we have?”

 

As I always say, your people are your biggest asset.  Even more so if they are engaged and enjoying their work.

 

Most employers forget about HR, or at least think it’s a one-off cost as opposed to an ongoing support system for your business.

 

Stick to a budget

Have you started to make plans for growth or change?  If so, have you factored in and budgeted for HR?  If not, why not?

 

HR isn’t just there for the tough things in life, such as disputes and tribunals (although obviously we help with that too).  We also help with contracts, advice, workplace culture, training, recruitment, and making sure that you are covered legally too (in terms of adhering to legislative rules).

 

That last point is important. The contracts you downloaded off the internet or the advice you got from your mate in the pub are, in almost all cases, not fit for purpose.

 

Don't go to court

Doing HR on an ad-hoc basic isn’t cost-effective and doesn’t give you the reassurance that you need.

 

This is where I come in.

 

As a business owner or decision maker, HR should be in your budget every year.  Not just to help you stay out of court (although, let’s be honest, that’s a bonus).

 

The labour market is still very tough. You need to attract (and then retain) the best people.  And that won’t happen unless you make your business growth a priority.

 

You need to stand out

Bespoke HR support will ensure that your documentation is fit for your business rather than your sector.  You don’t want contracts that look the same as those of your competitors - you want to stand out (in a good way).

More to consider

P.S. if you’re looking at last year’s budget and thinking ‘oops,we forgot to add a column for the Christmas party’, don’t forget to add it this year – and factor a few extra quid considering you have decent growth plans, so you will have a bigger team… for which you need a decent HR service.
