Being a business owner is tough.
Speak to any business owner about the positives, and they’ll talk about flexibility, being your own boss, and getting to choose who you work with.
However, speak to them about the negatives of running a business, and it may be a longer conversation.
We can talk about financial worries, employees, stress, long hours, bad clients, work/life balance, and still not achieving the freedom we expected.
I recently felt like I lost my mojo.
It was just after I returned from a holiday in which my wife and I travelled across Europe (see last month’s blog for all the details). It was more than post-holiday blues this time. I was feeling a little jaded and disillusioned, as it felt like I was immediately jumping back on the hamster wheel.
I always have tough weeks in my business - but recently it’s been harder than usual - with client demands, staff issues, and spending a lot of time on the road.
I am grateful to have a great business coach (and it was an investment I made from the early days of my business). In our weekly meeting, we talked about losing my mojo, the reasons why I felt like this, and how I could overcome the feeling.
It is great to have someone to talk to, and I am now once-again focussed on a period of growth after resetting my goals for the business.
If you are a business owner and an employer, you may experience similar things.
Being a founder is hard, and you need that accountability. Whether it is a business coach, your family, your friends, or your team - you need that support.
Something that many of clients talk about is getting stuck in the day-to-day running of their business; managing their team; and fire-fighting issues on a daily basis. A combination of these things can be the perfect storm to losing one’s mojo.
As an experienced and independent HR consultant, I can look at things from an outsider’s perspective, whilst also knowing and advising the right path that my clients should take – especially when it comes to their team, leadership challenges, and workplace culture.
Often, it’s okay to take a step back or even sideways – you don’t always have to keep pushing forward. A rest and a reset are better than continually pushing towards a goal.
I am very familiar with the concept of the change curve – where things get a little worse before they get a lot better. It’s a representation of the cliché: ‘sometimes you have to take one step back to take two steps forward’.
A HR team can be there to support you too. To make sure you’re making the right decisions, treating the team right, and creating a positive workplace culture.
If you are an employer and you need help to rediscover your mojo and to take away the worries of managing a team, then please get in touch for an informal chat about how me and my team can help you with HR, support your business growth, and ensure long-term success.
